Osmosis occurs when a liquid moves through a Semi-Permeable Membrane (cell walls) into a solution with a higher concentration of salt as osmotic pressure balances the water content inside the membrane with the water outside.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) uses applied pressure to force a solution (e.g. tap water) through a semi-permeable membrane with small holes only 0.1 Nano-meters wide, allowing only clean water to pass through removing 99.8% of impurities as wastewater.
